Older, Small Sedans vs. Luxury Sports Cars: The Cost of Maintenance

When you are looking to purchase a car, you have to be smart about it. This has always been true, but it is especially the case right now. Come on, we just do not have the money to waste on cars which are going to eat up all our cash, am I right? So, just as a for instance and for the purposes of this article, let's just say that you're looking at the differences in the cost of maintenance between an older, smaller sedan and a luxury or sports car. Two completely different kinds of cars, right? Well sure, to an extent. They have a lot of similarities as well, depending on the make and model in which you are most interested. Really, the differences do come down to the cost of maintenance. It is hard to find information about this particular aspect, but when you do, wow – let's just say that it really opens your eyes!

So then, we really ought to take a look at what you have to look forward to with the maintenance costs of both vehicles, right? Right! We are going to start out with the luxury and/or sports car, simply because, well, a lot of people are interested in those types of cars, even if they are buying pre-owned vehicles. There is no problem with that, and as far as the sales price goes, that can be worlds cheaper. Just remember, especially with sports cars and luxury cars, you want to absolutely make sure that they are certified used cars. That greatly reduces your chances of getting a lemon, and when it comes to a super stylish and elegant car, you definitely do not want to wind up with something sour.

All right, although this is not really a maintenance issue, per se, you have to think about the insurance costs for a luxury car. All told, it costs less to insure an older car. Used cars cost less to insure as well. However, luxury cars are fairly expensive to insure because so many of them are foreign models. The parts can be hard to find and expense to put in when they are found. Therefore, a used luxury car would likely cost around the same as a new sedan.

Now, depending on the make and model of your sports or luxury car, well naturally, the cost of maintenance will be different. On the whole, however, and in general, luxury vehicles tend to need scheduled maintenance much more often than other, "simpler" cars, if you will. Some of them actually have to be taken apart in order to fix them! Even small repairs can be two to three times more expensive than what you would pay for the repairs on an older, smaller sedan. You also have to take into consideration that luxury cars may require different, much more expensive tires, and even expensive gas!

Conversely, it almost goes without saying that the smaller and less expensive the car, the less expensive the maintenance costs. But! We are, of course, talking about older small sedans, and when you purchase an old car, you have to figure in that it may cost more to maintain. Now, it might not be that much, but it is something to consider, especially when you are purchasing an older used car. Given the overall sales price for an older sedan, you will be saving money. However, you should be careful from the beginning to make sure that, although old, the sedan you buy is not an absolute rust bucket. In which case, it will absolutely be less expensive.
